According to the Harvard Business Review, delegating tasks is an effective technique, but there are instances when a manager should not just pass on a project or task.
Management experts will usually advise that a manager delegates as much as possible, both developing employees abilities and giving themselves time to focus on more important tasks.
However, there are times when passing on a task or project may not be the best course of action, for example:
1. When there is a lack of clarity - If the problem cannot be explained precisely or with clear instructions, it is better to hold on to the task until its become clearer.
2. When the manager will benefit from the experience - It's good to develop employees, but managers should also pay attention to their own development and hold on to tasks that will majorly assist their own growth.
3. When the project is too valuable - There are times when a manager reall is the best person for the job. Not because it will get done faster or better, but because the project is simply too important to pass on to others."
This management tip was adapted from "Three Reasons You Shouldn't Delegate" by Whitney Johnson, which can be read here: http://blogs.hbr.org/johnson/2010/12/three-reasons-you-shouldnt-del.html.
