Nearly a quarter of small business owners surveyed in a new YouGov survey said that they allowed all of their employees to work from home all of the time, though 11% still believed that their staff would be less productive at home.
The survey, which was carried out by YouGov on behalf of NewVoiceMedia, found that 85% of the SMEs that did not permit homeworking, required their employees to be physically present on site.
For 12% of respondents it was not having the correct technology that was the main obstacle, even with the availability of cloud technology, which has money saving appeal since it eliminates the requirement to purchase and maintain expensive equipment.
Of the small businesses who did allow homeworking, 60% believed that it increased productivity, 60% stated that it motivates staff, and 58% said it encouraged better relationships with their employees.
Although working from home can be positive for both employers and employees, it can also result in workers feeling isolated if they are not managed effectively.
