Small Businesses Call For Less Red Tape

The Coalition Government has received fresh calls from small businesses to reduce the amount of regulation in relation to employment and health and safety laws.

Research by IRIS Software has indicted that businesses are currently concerned that the government’s agenda does not reflect the most important issues when it comes to protecting the interests of small businesses and stimulating economic growth.

Managing director of IRIS SME Solutions, Oliver Shaw, commented: “The good news is that small and medium sized enterprises feel that the coalition government has up until now shown a good understanding of the considerable challenges that they are facing."

He continued, “However, what this research demonstrates is a worrying disconnect between what small businesses really need now, which is to be allowed to focus on growing their businesses and, in some cases, merely surviving, and the government’s agenda.”

The research also suggests that a third of business owners view employment legislation as the area of business that requires the most reduction in 'red tape'.

The survey highlighted other areas that small businesses want the government to focus on, for example access to finance for small businesses, with 83% of businesses claiming that UK banks are not providing enough credit or support.

Mr Shaw added: “Up until now the coalition government has been making all the right noises about reducing red tape, with its ‘one in, one out’ approach to new legislation, and improving access to finance for small businesses. Now it needs to back these words up with actions.”
