Britain’s freelance community has been praised today by David Cameron for its massive contribution to the nation’s economy.
David Cameron, speaking on National Freelance Day, commended the UK’s freelance community, saying that their contribution to the nation’s economy has been substantial. He went on to say that the UK’s 1.4 million freelance workers had shown great courage in choosing this lifestyle choice.
Mr Cameron stated, in a letter to the PCG (Professional Contractors Group), “I can’t tell you how much admiration I have for people who leave the comfort of a regular wage to strike out on their own. It takes a lot of courage – and without that courage this country would be a much poorer place.
“More and more people are choosing freelancing, recognising that it strikes the right balance between work and life in the 21st century, and as we go for economic growth, this government is getting right behind them.”
The PCG contracted a survey that has now suggested that the majority of all businesses are willing to support freelancers. Polling a selection of business leaders, 60% disclosed that their business would find it hard to work without the help of freelancers, whilst a further 55% stated that freelancers were very important in the growth of the UK economy.
Additionally, 64% of those questioned felt that the traditional working day of ‘nine to five’ was now redundant and was not applicable to their employees, thus stressing the flexibility of freelancing. Freelance opportunities, in spite of the economic environment, are expected to maintain the same or increase in companies, according to 73% of those participating in the survey.
The managing director of PCG, John Brazier, said that “Freelancers bring talent, skills and flexibility to the market place. The results of our poll confirm that more and more people see freelancing as a conscious career choice and it is encouraging to see in the poll that their worth, skill and flexibility is appreciated and seen as a necessity by businesses throughout the UK.”
