Entrepreneurial Start-ups Encouraged By Business TV

A recent study has revealed that TV shows such as Dragons’ Den and The Secret Millionaire are both causing non-business owners to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit, but to also see business owners in a more positive light.

This was seen in figures collected by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, in a re-evaluation of the 1,250 respondent of the original GEM UK 2009 Adult Population Survey. 58% of those asked who did not own or run a business claimed that due to programmes such as the ones mentioned, they has a more positive attitude towards entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, 51% had become conscious of entrepreneurship as a career option as a result of the TV coverage, with 40% of those surveyed stating that the programmes available helped to provide an insight into the practical steps needed to starting a business.

On the other hand, 66% of those who are business owners believed that the recent media coverage of entrepreneurs has sought to portray them in a more encouraging manner.

Mark Prisk, Business and Enterprise Minister, stated that “the media has such an important role to play in creating a positive image around entrepreneurship and starting your own business. It is very encouraging to see such a dramatic shift in recent years. I hope this trend continues.”
