SMEs Believe UK Employment Law Too Complex

A recent survey has showed how 94% of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) believe that UK employment law is currently too complex and problematic.

The survey carried out on behalf of career management consultancy Right Management interviewed 250 SMEs and discovered that 87% felt that they comply with applicable legislation.

However, there were geographical variations, for example small businesses in the south were more likely to feel they act in accordance with employment legislation, despite its complexity. In Scotland, the figure is 84%, increasing to 90% of SMEs in London and the South East.

Clearly, a significant number of small UK companies still fail to comply and the complexity of employment legislation is a major factor in this.

Jayne Carrington, Managing Director of Right Management commented: “The government should allow companies to focus on developing their business rather than focusing on complex legislation. That’s vital if SMEs are to be more successful in the future.”

A positive sign for the future is PM David Cameron’s proposed review of employment law that could see SMEs becoming exempt from the most complex and onerous employment legislation.
